Kalashnikov Enters The overland/adventure bike arena with the UM-1
Anybody who’s been involved in military gear, specifically guns will be familiar with the name Kalashnikov as the maker of the famously reliable AK-47 assault rifle, used by the Russian military for years.
Well, the Kalashnikov name is back but not in its regular military circles but in the adventure motorcycle market with the introduction of the Kalashnikov UM – 1. The new motorcycle was unveiled at the 2018 international Military Technical Forum. If the motorcycle shares the same reliability and indestructibility of its famous namesake the AK-47 it will be welcomed with open arms in the world of overlanding and in adventure motorcycles.
As if simply entering the adventure motorcycle market wasn’t challenging enough, Kalashnikov decided to do it with an all electric bike. That’s right the UM – 1 is all electric and weighs between 364–540 lbs, it can travel at a maximum speed of 62 mph with a range of 93 miles on a single charge. Well, the stats are not amazing, especially if you plan on using it as a true adventure vehicle, for their first attempt in this new space it’s not that bad.
